How to Get There

All international flights now go to Charles DeGaulle airport in Paris.  You will arrive in Terminal 2 (there are 3 terminals). There are 2 ways to get to Avaray from the airport:

  1. Take a taxi from Charles DeGaulle Airport to Austerlitz train station in Paris (approx 30 min). Buy tickets for the train to Orleans and Blois. Take the train and get off at Beaugeancy (approx 1 hr 45 min). Take a taxi to the car rental agency. The closest is Europcar in Tavers (approx 3 kms from station). The address is as follows:

    RN(Route Nationale) 152 Station Total
    45190 Tavers, France
    Phone: (0) 238440472
    Fax: (0) 238460257

It is best to reserve a car in advance. Exit onto RN152 and turn right(west) toward Blois. Continue straight approximately 12 kms on RN152. Look for the sign Avaray (D70). Turn left and follow the road straight ahead (approx 1 km). When the road bears slightly to the left, keep going straight on a small paved road. You will see the entrance to Chateau d`Avaray straight ahead . Go through the gate and follow the gravel road around to the right until you come to the front of the Chateau. You may park and unload in front. Walk across the bridge into the entry. Turn left through the double doors. The door to the Grand Apartment is straight ahead at the foot of the stone staircase. The lock box with the key is on your right. You will receive the combination prior to your trip. Enjoy!

For those renting the tower apt., the apt is on the 3rd floor of the northeast corner of the Chateau. The entry door to the staircase is off the northeast corner of the interior courtyard of the Chateau. You may park your car in the courtyard while unloading and access the staircase. At the top of the staircase, turn around to the left. The door to the tower apt. is straight ahead. The lock box is to the left of the door.

  2. Rent a car at Charles DeGaulle. Go down to the car rental area. Make sure that you get a map.  You might consider bringing one with you from the U.S. Take A1 out of the airport to A3.  Follow A3 to Bagnolet. Proceed south on the Parapherique (circular freeway around Paris).Take this to A6 (Port d`Italie) and exit to the right. Follow A6 south and look for the signs A10 to Bordeaux.  Take A10 and follow it all the way to the Mer exit.  Get off at Mer (there is a toll of about 10 euros)  and follow the road straight to the roundabout. Exit the roundabout to the left on N152 and follow the directions as described above. The trip should take you about 2 hours depending on traffic.  Beware that driving in Paris is not for the faint of heart. If you have not driven in Europe before, you may want to go with someone who has, at least the first time.
